Palermo the International Capital of Swing for Three Days
Press Release
Sicilian Swingage Festival
Tribute to Norma Miller
Mondello, April 11-13, 2025
Palermo, March 20, 2025 – The Sicilian Swingage Festival is organized by Asdc Swing Age Palermo with the sponsorship of the Sicilian Region, Department of Tourism, Sport, and Entertainment. It will take place from April 11 to 13, 2025, in the stunning gulf of Mondello, Sicily. This highly anticipated event will bring together dancers, musicians, and swing enthusiasts from all over the world.
Swing originated in the 1920s and 1930s in the African American neighborhood of Harlem, New York, during a time of racial segregation and discrimination. Despite economic and social hardships, Black communities found jazz music and swing dance to be a means of expression and cultural empowerment. During this era, venues like the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem were among the few places where Black and white people could dance together, openly defying segregation laws. Swing dancing, with its infectious energy and spirit of freedom, became a symbol of integration and resistance against discrimination. It was more than just a dance; it was a way to celebrate African American identity and culture. Through jazz music and the liberating movements of Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Jitterbug, dancers expressed joy, creativity, and resilience, breaking the societal constraints of the time. In the following decades, swing spread worldwide, influencing not only music and dance but also civil rights movements.
The Festival was made possible thanks to the support of Leto & Adelfio Assicuratori and Gervasi LAB.
The choice of Palermo reflects the city’s ability to embrace different cultures and promote social inclusion. Born as a form of resistance against social injustice, swing dance has become a universal language that unites people of all ethnicities and nationalities.
This year, the festival holds special significance as it celebrates the 105th birthday of the legendary Norma Miller, known as “The Queen of Swing.” Six years after her unforgettable presence in Palermo, the festival will open with a tribute to her extraordinary life, sharing moving stories about her legacy. Norma Miller was an enduring symbol of energy, creativity, and passion, inspiring and connecting generations of dancers through the universal power of dance.
